PORTUGUESE TIMOR

Indonesia's intentions C.V.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, Feb. 23. The Australian Government has been urged to bring diplomatic pressure to bear on the Indonesian Government to allow the people of Portugese Timor to decide their own future. A special meeting of church, aid, trade union and student organisations was held in Canberra today after a newspaper report that Indonesia was considering mili. tary intervention in Timor.

Foreign Affairs officials described the report, which quoted a high level intelligence report as “highly speculative.” The newspaper report said Indonesia was planning, within the next two weeks, an amphibious assault on Dili, the capital of Portugese Timor and a parachute attack on the Baucau airfield.

A Foreign Affairs spokesman would say only that Australia was closely watching the situation.
