WELLINGTON.
The New Zealand Games 5000 metres winner, Dick Quax (Auckland), has been named as a last-minute replacement in the team to contest the world cross-country championships in Morocco next month.
Quax, who returned last Friday from a three-week tour of North America, where he competed on the United States indoor circuit, has taken the injured Dick Tayler’s place.
The bulk of the team left Auckland on Saturday night, but Quax and Jack Foster
I (Rotorua), another replace[ment runner remained behind 'and will catch up with the rest either at Seville, in Spain, or at Rabat, the venue for the cross-country event on March 16.
John Walker, who has also been competing in the United States, joined the team in Los Angeles yesterday.
The composition of the men’s team was thrown into confusion late last week by the withdrawal of two runners, Tayler and Paul Ballinger (New Plymouth). Ballinger was replaced by John Sheddan (Canterbury), and the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was hoping that Rod Dixon, an original member who had pulled out because he did not feel fully fit, would reconsider his decision. But Dixon confirmed his unavailability, and Quax was called into the side.
Cricket.— The West Indies had made 44 without loss in reply to the Patron Xi’s 277/6 declared at the close of play on the first day of a three day match in Rawalpindi. Muddasir Nazir (94) was the top scorer for the Indians.
