Retail demand for most imeat continued to be gener-| ally poor last week, but off ■take of New Zealand, lamb !on the Smithfield Markei; continued to be steady, the; Meat Board reports. The promotional activities; of some retailers contributed! to the continued interest in' New Zealand lamb at retail,; and this was balanced by; steady supplies of the prod-1 uct being available whole- 1 sale. Consequently, realis-) ations were basically, unchanged from previous; levels. Domestic lamb was' 'pitched in reduced amounts! and with the continuing seasonal decline in quality of) I medium weight, carcass [prices for this commodity) advanced accordingly. With this progressive widening in the price differ-' entia) between domestic and, New Zealand lamb, both; 1 wholesale and retail, the im-| ported product attracted a [greater interest — whole-! ! salers holding firm at cur-! Irent quotations both for I Smithfield and ex-ship sales. ; ) Offerings of fresh beef met! la steady demand, and values! remained firm.
