Foreign investment
Sir, — One cannot cease to be surprised at the extraordinary unconsistencies revealed in the Government’s decisions on matters relating to the investment of foreign funds in New Zealand projects. In Takaro Lodge, Te Anau, for instance, Mt Stockton Rush had succeeded in creating something imaginative and very beautiful. Years of planning and collecting had resulted in a resort that was unique in New Zealand and
indeed, in the Southern Hemisphere. Yet, as a result of Government opposition to Japanese investment all this must go under the auctioneer’s hammer. So strong is this opposition that an appeal is being lodged against the Supreme Court’s decision in favour of Mr Rush’s application. Why, then, do we hear on television news that the Government is expected to consider favourably the application of a Swiss firm to develop a new ski field on Mount Ruapheu? Does this mean that the Government repudiates Japanese, but would welcome Swiss investment? — Yours, etc., INVIDIOUS. February 23, 1975.
