Govt seeking fish figures
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, January 27. The talks between the Government and the Russians on fishing around New Zealand are likely to include some requests for details of the Russian catches. The question of how much fish the Russians were taking out of New Zealand waters was raised earlier this year at the annual conference of the Federation of Commercial Fishermen at Greymouth. The general manager of the Fishing Industry Board (Mr J. S. Campbell) told the conference that he had been told overseas that the total fish produced in and around New Zealand waters was about 190,000 tonnes a year. New Zealand and Japanese trawlers were each catching about 50,000 tonnes.
The Japanese squid fleet a year ago caught 14,000 tonnes, and the line tuna catch was 11,000 tonnes. “There is another 65,000 tonnes to be accounted for," said Mr Campbell, adding that while he had never seen any indications of the quantity of fish being taken by the Russians, they had given an undertaking to provide the figures.
