CHANCE FOR FORTA CAVALLA TO 'EARN EXPENSES’
By
G. K. Yule
Forta Cavalla will have a great chance of contributing something worth while towards the expenses involved in starting her in the Benson and Hedges Inter-Dominion series when she contests the Canterbury Handicap at Addington tomorrow evening.
One of the top fillies of la«st season, she has taken time to return to her peak form this term. However,, she has seldom been guilty of a bad run and on Wednesday night there .was considerable merit in her, third placing behind Hurricane Star and Just-A-Glow over 2000 m.
She received an interrupted run and came from a' good way back starting thefinal 800 m. She was doing as' well as anything at the I finish and over 600 m morel ground thy; time she should, be much harder to beat. i Just-A-Glow is one of the, more talented four-year-old i mares in Canterbury. She! came from an awkward: position to take second on Wednesday. If she reproduces that run, she could make Forta Cavalla work hard for her second success of the season.
Luck was right against Spry Guy on the first night of the meeting and it is doubtful if he could encounter such problems again. In the circumstances he did well to finish sixth Two starts ago he won the Timaru Cup after a first-class run. The extra- distance should suit him better than Wednesday’s sprint. Micron is capable of a bold run, as also are Deeside, Thurber Command and' Hurrania, if first-night run-. ning is any guide.
Forto Prontezza. one of the more promising three-year-olds produced in South-: land this season, is a half-; brother by Sly Yankee to Forta Cavalla and he could: go close to completing the night's double for his dam,| Glene. On his first visit to! Addington in December he was beaten only by the out-j standing Parlez Votvs. Since: then he has taken all before' him in the south. Forto Prontezza has to give a start of 10m to Steven Slock, whose fourth on' Wednesday earned him the! title of “horse of the night” j made by journalists. He encountered trouble early and came from far back in a! fast-run race. He is obvious-
ly at his peak and is expected to prove a match for his southern rival. Commissioner, too, will be in demand after his solid finish for fourth to Hurricane Star on the first night. He broke at the start, but might not be so keen this time and could begin cleanly. Bronze Regal and Bradleigh appeal most of the horse.s on the limit, while Eau Sauvage and Graduand, both on 10m, were winners on Wednesday. Graduand, in particular, appeals as his time w r as some 6sec faster than that of Eau Sauvage.
