Century to Mac Ewan
The Canterbury under 23 cricket team declared at 231 for seven in the match against Wairarapa at Burwood Park yesterday with Paul Mac Ewan scoring an unbeaten century in 116 minutes.
A free-scoring opening partnership of 116 from the Central Districts batsmen Dermot Payton and Warren Murdock gave the Wairarapa second innings a sound start, but then the Canterbury offspinner, Doug Bracewell struck form and his six wickets were instrumental in the side being dismissed for 225.
Canterbury had to score 172 runs in 130 minutes, but keen fielding and accurate bowling, particularly by the medium-paced Rob Wylie kept the scoring rate down.
The loss of three wickets with the score at 49 put the side on the defensive, and the batsmen were content to play out time. Wairarapa 177 and 225 (W. Murdock 68, D. Payton 40; D. Bracewell 6/47). Canterbury under 23 231 (P. Mac Ewan 100 not out: G. Walters 3/48. D. Crisp 3/55) and 97/6 (R. Fuller 27 not out: R. Wylie 4/43).
