Tennis semi-finalists
Canterbury is now the only association to have one or more players in all the semi-finals of the T.A.A. age-group tennis championships at Wilding Park.
After yesterday’s play it has six players in the under 15 and under 17 sections. Next are Auckland and North Shore with a combined total of four.
There was only one minor upset yesterday, when the No. 2 seed in the under 15 boys singles, D. Chapman (Canterbury) was well beaten by S. Smith (Auckland), 6-3, 6-1. In the next round, however, Smith walked off the court and defaulted the game after the No. 6 seed, G. Jaine (Auckland) was leading, 7-6, 5-0. SMost of the semi-finals are now dominated by seeded players — in spite of the number of lower-seeded players that were defeated in earlier rounds. Those who defeated seeds have now
generally been defeated in later matches by other seeds.
Although the rain on the first day of play cast doubts on whether the championships would end on time the organisers have had three fine days to catch up. The finals in all sections should therefore finish on Saturday.
