RANDOM REMINDER
TRICK SHOTS
The earliest day of April does not necessarily herald an upsurge in the activities of the man who gets his laughs not so much from others but from himself on the remaining 364 days of the year. There is a Napier woman, a charming soul, in the mid-forties, who, having raised a family found herself at long last with time on her hands. She pondered to herself the precise manner in which her leisure moments could be put to good use. The answer came quickly. Golf, After all,
I she mused, why not? Her; husband, a pedantic souli Iby nature and profession, had enjoyed his golf and ' often tarried longer than I necessary at the nineteenth. From him she had : learned all there was to know about the game. Apart that is, from lessons. She would teach him one. He had said repeatedly that many games were either won or lost with putting. Bearing that in mind, she decided to brush up her technique. She took the putter from his bag and also (extracted what was in I her opinion, the very best ball — a gleaming 'white one. Not for her
the scruffy-looking ones.. So, armed with the one [stick, golf ball nestled in;
(her purse, she drove to! ' the putting practicei green.
It was a bewildering experience. She started lining them up from dis-i tances varying from 40ft to six inches. And all lipped the cup but failed to drop into it. It was when she told her husband during the evening meal what a miserable time she had had that afternoon that he reminded her that he had purchased the ball from a novelty shop in Sydney when they had visited i there during the last term holiday. A trick one.
