Bursary increase demanded
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Technical institute students have joined university students in demanding an increase in tertiary education bursaries. The Technical Institute I Students’ Association have asked the Minister of Education (Mr Amos) to reconsider his decision not to increase the bursaries, and it called on the Opposition spokesman (Mr L. W Gandar) for assistance. Like the university students, the technical institute students have asked the Goviernment to make an interim increase until it can implement its proposals for a standard tertiary bursary. “It has become even more imperative that the student bursary be increased, as the traditional courses of holiday and part-time employment during the year have dried up,” said the president of the association (Mr K. Newlands). “Students and workers will no longer be able to supplement their bursary payments while training at technical institutes.
“The association strongly urges the Government to implement its election manifesto concerning student bursaries.”
