Australians dominate schools’ contest
Australian athletes dominated the first day of the secondary schools* track and field contest between ; New Zealand, New South ; Wales and Victoria being i held in conjunction with the New Zealand Games. , They won the first three events. Two New Zealanders, Greg ! Banks and Anthony Rogers, ; led into the straight of the j boys* 800 m, but they tired and both were passed by i Gary Eaton (New South ' Wales) and Bruce Thompson : (Victoria). 1 Thompson .won in the creditable time of Imln 53.55ec, 1.1 sec better than ■ the national secondary ■ schools’ record.
The 18-year-old Nfiw South Wales athlete, Luigfna Torso, gave an exceptional performance in the girls' shot put, recording a best throw of 14.27 m (46ft 9} in).
