Glide time benefit

Flexible working hours — glide time — could lead to more economic use of public transport, especially buses, the Ministry of Transport’s traffic engineering section has concluded in a research report.

The report is based on a study made during a fourmonth trial of glide time by the National Mutual Insurance Company in Wellington during 1973.

It says that glide time reduced the arrival and depar-ture-time peaks, and the load on buses. Private car transport increased slightly at the expense of buses, but the swing was not statistically significant, the report says. The report says that the Ministry is interested in glide time because of the likely reduction of public transport peaks and more economic use of public transport, plus reduced traffic congestion in cities.
