CLINIC CHECK
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. Staff at the Remuera abortion clinic are trying to reconcile figures on the numbers of files the police took away with the numbers returned. “It appears on our counting so far that the police have returned more files than they said they took away,” said Dr R. B. Hunton, medical director of the clinic today. “We are now re-check-ing.” Counting was difficult because notes from the middle period of the clinic’s operation had been mixed with files, and these now
had to be reconciled with the index which the police had returned. “So far the figures just don’t correlate,” he said. The police have retained about 15 files for further inquiries. A number of women who have received help from the clinic are believed to be concerned whether their files are among those held. Dr Hunton said that so far none of them had telephoned the clinic to inquire. He said the police appeared to be continuing their inquiries. They had now interviewed four doctors associated with the clinic and three counsellors, asking them about case notes.
