Container dispute

(N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, January 23. Further trial loadings of frozen sheep meat from the Railways’ new insulated containers will be held at Napier and Timaru. The Railways has had 200 of the containers, which were designed and built to replace many of the old wooden waggons, since last July but has not been able to use them because of a dispute over manning. The dispute is between the Waterside Workers’ Union and the Port Employers’ Association.

The association’s general secretary, Mr N. D. Oliver, said in Wellington today that watersiders claim there is more work in unloading the containers, compared with waggons, and want the gangs Increased by two to a total of 10 men.

"We don’t agree. In an effort to solve the dispute further trial loadings will be held at Timaru and Napier as soon as possible.”
