HOT LINE TO P.M.

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 23. A monster protest telegram sent from Invercargill’s Chief Post Office today should keep the Prime Minister’s Office well supplied with week-end reading. At a cost of $1399.07, the telegram — a petition with 17,728 signatures asking that the Ports Authority reconsider a decision to curtail the development of Bluff as a container port — began transmission to Wellington at 10 o’clock this morning. Three operators are working on it, and even though four outlets in Wellington are handling the telegram, it will take about 33 hours to transmit.

Mr Rex Powley, president of the Bluff Watersider’s Union, has requested that the telegram be delivered at Mr Rowling’s office at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
