Visitor system might end
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, January 14.
The custom of Government-approved official visitors to psychiatric hospitals might end in March.
The official visitor’s role has been described as providing a person independent of the Public Service to visit the hospitals and talk to patients. This is intended to provide someone outside the hospital willing to listen to complaints and take an interest in patients’ welfare. The visitors are appointed for a five-year term, but present appointments will end on March 31. When control of the psychiatric hospitals was transferred from the Department of Health to hospital boards doubts were expressed about the need to continue the system. The department undertook to review it with hospital boards. The Auckland Hospital Board has now advised that it concurs with the suggestion that such appointments should not be continued. The
board controls the Oakley, Carrington, Kingseat, Raventhorpe, and Mangere psychiatric hospitals.
