CHICAGO. January 13. Twenty-five persons are now known to have died in blizzards which have swept the Mid-West of the United States.
The National Guard has been called out in South Dakota, Minnesota. and Nebraska to rescue people stranded by the blizzards at the week-end, the worst on the United States Northern Plains for 10 years.
In some places snowdrifts 14ft deep trapped cars and
trains, and winds of up to 90 miles an hour tore down power lines, ripped roofs from houses, and felled trees on to roads.
At Fergus Falls, Minnesota, five persons have been rescued after spending 20 hours in a snow-bound car.
High waves on Lake Michigan swept two unoccupied cottages into the lake in southern Michigan. The bodies of a mother and her seven-year-old son
were found next to their snowmobile in Willmar, Minnesota.
Agriculture officials said thousands of cattle would probably die in the snow. A tornado hit Panama City, Florida, yesterday, killing a baby, injuring three adults, and destroying several houses. Twelve persons were killed and 110 injured when a series of tornadoes hit southern states on Friday.
