Southdown sale disappointing

The Southdown section of the Manawatu-Walrarapa Stud Breeders' sale was as disappointing as the Romneys on the first day. Forty-three rams only were sold from a catalogue of 74 at an average of 8325 and a top price of $9OO compared with last year’s 57 rams at $486 and top price of $2BOO. South Island breeders took all the top prices and averages. J. D. and W. T. Robertson. Gore, average $525 for four rams with a top price of $9OO paid by Allied Farmers, Whangarei. for Mr E. Drake. D. H. Robertson and Sons, Gore, averaged $412 for six rams. Burnfoot Stud, Amberley. 408 for three, J. A. Brown. Camara. $350 for five, and L. G. McKay. Gore.l
$325 for three. T. E. M. Brook*. Leeston $325 {or two. The atmosphere was different when the complete flock of South, down ewes of Mr A. J. slalk (Feilding) came into the ring. Bidding was spirited with prices ranging up to $l3O for single ewes and $B5 a head for pens of four. Fifty one-shear ewes averaged $3B, with a top price of $lOO given by lan Brown. Wanganui. Thirty-two two-shear ewes averaged $55. The top price ewe went to D. Wartieman Matawal at $ll2. Twenty-three three-ehear ewes averaged $5l. Mr A. A. Hallgarth (Hastings) gave top price of $125. Nine four-ahear ewes sold to 18130 paid by G. Wagner (Auckland), and averaged $5l. Over-all the flock of 132 ewsfl averaged $44.
