®New Zealand Forest Service NEW ZEALAND FOREST SERVICE STUDY AWARD FOR SCIENCE TRAINEES THE Forest Research Institute offers study awards in forestry science, wood science, chemistry, physics, engineering, botany and zoology, the earth sciences and some branches of agriculture to students who have completed at least one year of B.Sc. study at university or have gained high marks in entrance scholarships. The standard allowance of $5OO a year is paid concurrently with any university bursaries or junior scholarship. Boarding and marriage allowances are paid under certain conditions. The study awards are continued annually until the degree is completed, provided satisfactory progress is maintained. Following the attainment of bachelors and masters degrees outstanding graduates may be assisted financially for Ph.D. study after a period of continuous employment at the Institute to assess research potential. Students are bonded to remain in the Public Service after graduation for one year of each year of assistance given. During the long vacation award holders will undertake research work and receive a salary dependent on qualifications and experience. There is no requirement to work during short vacations.
