North Beach rescue
A girl was taken to Christchurch Hospital with shock after being rescued from the surf at North Beach about 12.30 p.m. yesterday.
Patrolmen said that the girl had tried to swim against a rip sweeping her out to sea. She soon became exhausted, and put up her hand to at'tract the attention of life-savers.
The patrolman on duty and two members of the North Beach Surf Life-saving Club brought her ashore, and she was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Mr P. Stuart, secretary of the club, yesterday advised swimmers who found themselves caught in a rip not to swim against it because of the danger of exhaustion. The rip usually returned to shore further along the beach, he said.
