Labour loses its majority
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 10. The British Labour Government will lose its over-all majority of three in the House of Commons when Parliament resumes on Monday. Two Labour members will be in hospital and a third— Mr John Stonehouse —is in Australia. The latest blow to (he Government’s precarious majority came when it was disclosed that Mr Raphael Tuck, the 64-year-old member for Watford, was going into hospital for a hip operation and was expected to be absent from Parliament for a month. The Labour member for Huddersfield East, Mr J. P. W. Mallalieu, entered hospital just before Christmas. However, it is believed that the Government is not unduly worried about the disappearance of its majority, because the Welsh Nationalists are likely to back Labour on most issues, along with at least some of the Scottish Nationalists.
