Police chief gets tough

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) PEARL (Mississippi), Jan. 10.

Police Chief Toby Wood has issued shotguns to policemen. and ordered them to “shoot any person caught in the act of committing an armed robbery.” Wood issued his orders after the beating of a 64-year-old motel owner during an armed robbery. Pearl is a recently incorporated area just across the Pearl River from the capital city of Jackson. It is considered part of the Jackson metropolitan area, which has had an upsurge of armed robberies in the last few months. “I want to make it absolutely clear and with no misunderstanding that if any person is caught in the act of committing an armed robbery he will be shot on sight,” Wood said.
