Government helicopter gunships and gunboats have struck at insurgent positions on an island in the Mekong River near the beleagured ferry town of Neak Luong, according to field reports reaching Phnom Penh.
Government defenders in Neak Luong, 28 miles southeast of the capital, had urgently appealed for supplies by air.
The town has been cut off by road from the capital since fighting erupted oh New Year’s Day. The town’s military commander, Colonel An Nil, told newsmen by phone that supplies of ammunition, petrol and food in the town were running dangerously tow after heavy fighting in the last few days.
The colonel said that a Mekong River supply convoy was out of the question — insurgent forces have been preventing Government convoys using the waterway. The supply situation in Neak Luong hsw been exacerbated by the arrival of between 50,000 and 70,000 refugees. Many have been housed in makeshift camps on the town’s, outskirts.
