CAUSE—EFFECT

Mrs Joanne Thomas, of 149 Bexley Road, holds the remains of her electric frying pan, thought to have started the fire which gutted her house early yesterday morning. In her other hand is the

telephone, melted by the heat. A neighbour saw flames coming from the back of the house about 4 a.m. The occupants, Mrs Thomas’s two sons, climbed to safety through bedroom windows. The fire spread quickly

through the house, charring the walls and ceilings of almost every room. Mrs Thomas spent much of yesterday recovering the few items of property not damaged. The family stayed at relatives’ houses last night.
