GV.Z. Press Association) ■ WELLINGTON; It was a batsman’s day in the opening round of the Brabin Shield cricket tournament at Kilbirnie Park yesterday. Last year’s co-winner, Canstarted the run feast with 263 for six declared. Mark Johnston showed fine form with an accomplished 71, then Chris Marks and Tim Murdoch combined in an unbeaten, 73-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Clive Currie (91 not out) and Bermie Wanden had an unbroken 136-run partnership after Wellington had lost two quick wickets. Points after the first day’s play were. Auckland 8. Canterbury 7, Wellington 4, Otago 2. Scores:— Canterbury 263/6 declared Johnston 71). Wellington 168/2. Auckland 243/8 declared (J. Reid 71. G. Jones 55). Otago 128/7 (W. Pauli 45 not out; P. Meads 3/31).

Cricket.—Auckland B scored 239 (Wallace 48, Stott 55) against Wellington B on the first day of a two-day match at Kilbirnie Park. Wellington. In reply. Welington had reached 134/4 at .stumps, with the former test ! player Bruce Murray, 52 not out. B. Patel scored 36 and 36, Kean ‘was 23 not out.
