Son gave alarm
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. A Pakaranga family spent the night on Motuketekete Island, near Kawau Island, after their trimaran sprang a leak. A Mayday distress signal was sent in the afternoon. The Trione was about midway between Tiri and Kawau I Island when she sprang a I leak in a float and was in danger of sinking, according to the Auckland coastguard.
I Coast Guard cutters were alerted, but the trawler Catopaxi reached the Trione first and helped her to Motuketekete Island where she was; beached for repairs. The three people on board the Trione were Mr K. J. Long, of Pakaranga, his wife and a nine-year-old son. This distress signal was sent out by the boy while his parents tended the pumps, said the coast guard. The family hope to patch the float and sail to port for permanent repairs.
