Watercolours of N.Z.
New Zealand in Watercolours. By Rena Swift. Whitcombe and Tombs.
Mrs Rena Swift’s modest collection of watercolour paintings of New Zealand scenes does not depart from the conventional or familiar. Many of her 47 landscapes or city scenes have been photographed over and over again in colour, but it is refreshing to look at her pleasant and undemanding versions. The collection covers a wide variety of New Zealand scenes. Mrs Swift ranges from the North Auckland Bush to Doubtful Sound. She has painted lakes and mountains, coastal beaches, and harbours. Her approach does not vary, and her colour range is limited. But nearly all the paintings have an air of spaciousness. They evoke the New Zealand scene simply and successfully, and are attractive for their freshness and absence of detail.
