‘No U.S. beef quotas ’
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, December 27. President Ford had decided against imposing quotas on beef exports to the United States for the time being, the “Washington Post” said today.
Instead, the newspaper said, he will ask foreign suppliers voluntarily to limit their exports to prevent a giut on the American market. The “Post” said the decision, to be announced during the next few days, aimed at striking a oalance between the demands of consumers confronted by the continually rising cost of meat in supermarkets and cattlemen hit by the lower prices paid by middlemen entrepreneurs. Cattle breeders have been pressing the Ford Administration to reimpose import quotas in order to promote the sale of home-bred beef. Quotas were suspended about 18 months ago because of rising prices. The “Washington Post” said the Administration feared that new beef import quotas might complicate negotiations on reforming world trade as well as provoke consumers already affected by rising prices and inflation.
