Sydney market dull and mainly lower
The Sydney stock market ended the week on a mainly irregular note in lack-lustre trading conditions; buyers were reserved, and volume remained low.
Gold stocks attracted some early attention, and made some gains. Central Norseman jumped 10c to 260 c, Emperor firmed 4c at 202 c, and Kalgoorlie 2c at 220 c, but G.M.K. was easier. Pancontinental rose to 270 c, but Peko, and Queensland Mines were weaker. Poseidon, and Gt Boulder were higher, but Western Mining was cut back 7c to 156 c.
Hamersley, Cons. Rutile, M.1.M., B.H. South, and Cudgen were unchanged, but Bougainville dropped another 2c to 90c.
Oils were mostly ignored. Woodside-Burmah dropped 3c to 70c and Timor 1c to 14c. Oil Search, and A.A.R. were steady.
B.H.P. dropped 10c to 516 c, j bringing its total losses for i the holiday-shortened week Ito 16c. The banks weakened, the iB.N.S.W. remained untraded, |and the C.8.A., National and A.N.Z. all lost ground The |C.B.C. rose 3c to 168 c. ' Insurances lacked support J after the Darwin cyclone, and the prospect of huge insurance settlements. Commercial Union dropped 2c to 25c. At one stage'it showed a buyer at 15c and a seller holding out at 26c. Q.B.E. was quoted 50c layer, and 75c seller against its previous close of 70c.
C.U.8., 1.A.C., Coles, and 1A.C.1. were slightly better, but Tooheys, Aust Guarantee, Amatii, and Myers fell. CSR lost 3c at 412 c, but Pioneer advanced 5c to 385 c. Coal and Allied was cut back 5c to 170 c, but Thiess held its ground. Comalco moved 5c up to 135 c.
