EIGHT DIE IN MINE EXPLOSION

| (N.ZP.A.Reuter—Copyright) LENS (France), Dec. 27. At least eight miners died today in a gas explosion at a coalmine near Lens, officials said. Several other miners were hurt, and six were severely burned. A mine official said the explosion occurred at the bottom of the 700-metre main shaft just after the 78 men on the morning shift arrived for work.

Rescuers arrived soon after the blast and began removing dead and injured.
