Side-car champion enters series
Stan Bayliss, the Australian champion, has made a late entry for the side-car events ! to be held in conjunction with the Marlboro $25,000 international motor-cycle road racing - series which begins in Wellington next Sun- ! day.
Bayliss will bring his fourcylinder Honda-powered machine and should prove a strong rival for the New Zealand champion, Paul Corbett, of Blenheim. Corbett will race a three-cylinder 750 Suzuki. A second Australian sidecar racer, Brian Holmes (Honda), has also entered. MONEY REFUSED But it now seems that the leading Australian solo racers
will not compete in theseries. Greg Hansford has* still not recovered his TZ7501 Yamaha from Indonesia, where he rode it in the re-‘ cent international grand prixj and Warren Willing and RonToombs have had their re-’ quests for substantial sums! of starting money turneddown. Toombs,, runner-up to Pat Hennen (United States) inthe recent Australian Pan* Pacific Cup series, asked fot $lOOO. “New Zealand riders do'. not ask for this sort ofmoney when they go to Aus-’ tralia so why should Austra-' lians expect it when they come here,” the organiser of the Christchurch round of the Marlboro series (Mi* Michael McPhee) said yesterday. IN CHRISTCHURCH The Christchurch round will be at Ruapuna Park on January 12. One prominent Australian will compete—Murray Sayle, who has been a regular visitor to New Zealand in recent years. He will be riding a six-speed 750 Kawasaki.
