There was “no way” New ; Zealand could afford further wage escalation through a cost-of-living order and free ‘ wage bargaining later next year, said the president of the Employers’ Federation (Mr J. E. S. Hammond). “New Zealand just does not have the economic capacity to tolerate the wage increases this would produce,” ( he said. Mr Hammond, after to-' day’s meeting of the federa-1 tion’s general council, said that it would put its view to the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) and the Minister of Finance (Mr Tizard) next week. Talks between the employers and the Government are scheduled for next Tuesday.
