Dangerous weapon

The Australia Consumers’l Association says that it: tested 14 brands of beach umbrellas and found that most were unstable when erected in dry sand and could become dangerous weapons if blown loose. A boy aged 14 was killed in Melbourne in January this year when the shaft of a flying umbrella struck him behind the right ear. The association recommended stabilising umbrellas with a wooden disc with a hole in the centre, which can be embedded in sand.—Sydney, November 29.
