Skipjack early
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 1. The season’s first sightings of skipjack tuna have been reported off Te Kaha, in the eastern Bay of Plenty. Mr G. Bell, a Whakatane fish-spotting pilot, has reported seeing a 10-ton school.! six to seven miles north of JFe Kaha, and two smaller schools four miles north of Whale Island. Dr D. Eggleston, senior scientist with the Fisheries Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, said today that although a few skipjack had j been caught, in recent weeks,! it was unusual for schools of this size to appear so early in the season.
