And fog on the lens
The total eclipse of the moon on Saturday was clear until just after totality about 3.45 a.m., when a fog moved in front of it. The log hindered the efforts of Christchurch astronomers who were trying to make occultation observations—timing when stars disappear behind the moon and when they reappear. The stars cannot be timed during a full moon because it is too bright.
Mr R. W. Cross, of the Christchurch Astronomical Society, said that It was impossible to time the stars after the fog moved across the moon. The moon, which was a bright, coppery red, with a bluish bright shadow on the rim had set before the eclipse had finished. It was very bright at the beginning of the eclipse, which Mr Cross said, was due to the very clear conditions.
