Cochrane defeats Hunter in 800 metres

Ihe Commonwealth Games representatisc. T. A. Cochrane (I Huh School Old Boys), provided some indication of his tremendous reserves of stamina when Ik scored a splendid win in the senior SOO metres event during the final round of the A.N.Z. Bank track and field league at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

It was a particularly satisfying win for him because among the vanquished in this particular race was the outstanding Otago runner, B. A. Hunter, who has been named on the list of “certainties” for the forthcoming New Zealand Games.

Cochrane’s time of Imin 52.55ec — over a distance twice as long as that on which he is concentrating — was his personal best and, perhaps, a pointer to where his future might lie in the long term. Hunter, who is not aiming to reach a peak until the time of the NewZealand Games, lacked his usual finishing speed and had to be content with third.

The very promising young Olympic club runner, W. Sheddan, caught him right on the line. Both recorded the same time, Imin 53.75ec. It was a popular and deserved win for Cochrane, who is hoping to be added to the games team as a sprinter. He led the field through the first lap in

54.55ec before allowing the former West Coast North | Island runner. D. B own : (Old Bovs), to take over the pace-making. With 200 metres to go. Cochrane made his bid. He went to the front and when he was still I there at the start of the finish-: ing straight, it was clear that' nobody was going to be able to’ match his sprint finish. Hunter came strongly off the bend and set off after Cochrane, but he could make no impression. Cochrane was well clear as he crossed the finishing line. I Hunter was caught by surprise I b.v Sheddan over the final few

I strides. Smith wins Earlier, Cochrane demon- | strated his excellent basic speed (with a second placing to another ! Commonw-ealth (lames sprinter, 18. Smith (Wellingtoni. Smith, i making his second appearance of : the season at Queen Elizabeth iII Park, won the race in the | good time of 10.7 sec. Cochrane I was a stride behind ii. lo.Bsec j with F. Davey (UniversityShirley) third. A special 200 metres race was | put into the programme at j Smith's request, and he also won I this. His time was 21.5 sec, ex- | cellent although six-tenths of a ’ I second outside his personal best. The runner-up was A. W. Tweedie (High School Old Boys) ’ lin 22.55ec, the former New Zea-; iland junior champion sprinter,: |D. Berry (Old Boys) coming; third. Another Commonwealth Games! representative, G. Anderson; (Old Boys), narrowly won the 4001 metres after an interesting tussle! with the Games hurdler, R. Mc-

Intosh (Old Boys). Anderson recorded 49.95ee and Mclntosh 50.4 sec. N. Daniels (Old Boys) was close behind in 50.5 sec. As a spectacle, the race of the day was undoubtedly the senior 1590 metres. This was won by no more than half a stride by IF. Brookes (Technical) in the ; good time of 3min 53sec. The j ; runner-up in the same time was; ;J. R. Sheddan (Olympic), a re-1 ; serve for the New Zealand cross- , country team to travel to . Morocco in March. I The race was a stimulating I affair from the beginning. The I : field was tightly bunched as it. I went through the first lap in j 63sec. But by the end of the second lap, completed in 2min 9sec, J. Argue (Olympic), was firmly positioned in the lead with his rivals strung out behind in file. Argue clung to his lead with grim determination, but he was unable to shake off Brookes and Sheddan. At the entrance to the finishing straight, Brookes accelerated into the lead. Sheddan, the holder of the Canterbury 1500 metres title, went after him. Down the straight, Sheddan appeared to be narrowing the gap and Argue was only inches behind him, trying to retrieve the situation with his sprint. However, Brookes was not to i ibe caught. There was no more than a foot between him and Sheddan at the finish but the judges had no trouble deciding who had won, even though both were credited with the same time. Argue was a close third, just three-tenths of a second behind the winner. "Athlete" award The Farmers “Athlete of the Week” award went deservedly to K. McKee (Toe Hi for his leap of 1.96 metres in the juniorhigh jump. This equalled the standard for the New Zealand under-23 team to tour Australia and was only two centimetres short of the national junior record, held by another Canterbury athlete. P. Crampton.

It was also better than the winning performance of 1.80 metres in the senior event, achieved by the pole vault specialist, 51. Ritchie (Toe H), In spite of widespread protests. most of the throwing events were again held outside the main stadium in the warmup arena. The two New Zealand Games representatives, Mrs V. I. Young (shot) and B. Harland

'(hammer), both won their respective events with some fine ■ throwing but as far as the croud was concerned, they might as well have been competing on ; the moon. Mrs Young (Technical i recorded 13.5 m to eomfortablx beat her promising young clubI mate. Miss .1. Bishop. She re- ; corded 10.36 m. , Harland eflorriessly won the hammer event with a good throw iof 51.22 m In the women's sprints Miss B Peterson (Technical), was the I winner of the lOum in the fast ;time of ll.Ssec The runner-up ‘was her perennial rival. Miss J. Beckett 'Technical), in 12sec. Miss L. Trimble (Toe Hi was third.

Her moment of success came later in the day when site won the 400 m in 57.35ee. Miss D, Falvey 'Technical) showed line form to win the women’s 1500 m in 4min 57.8 sec. The Technical club, predictably. won both the major (open) and minor (under age) A.N.Z. Bank league competitions by a wide margin. In the major league. Technical added 73 points to bring its grand total to 364— 1.26 points clear of its nearest rivals. High School Old Boys. The minor league was somewhat closer. The yioung Avon club finished with a nourish by scoring 71 points on .Saturday but it wasn’t enough to turn the tables. Technical scored a further 54 to finish with 252. Avon’s aggregate total was 210. Final positions were: Major.—Technical 364. High School Old Boys 238. Avon 152, Toe H 139. New Brighton 101. Minor. —Technical 252. Avon 210 New Brighton 181.
