Fares under cost
(N.Z, Press Association - ) AUCKLAND, December 1. Cook Islanders flying to Rarotonga to vote in the General Election were being charged only §195, although the cost would be somewhat higher, said a spokesman for the Cook Islands Democratic Party in Auckland today.
The balance would be paid through a fund - raising campaign.
The spokesman said bridging finance would be provided by. Mr G. O’Farrell, of Christchurch, a businessman and a director of the charter company, Bon Voyage Travel, Ltd. He was a long-time supporter of the party. But the spokesman denied claims by the Premier of the Cook Islands (Sir Albert Henry) that, a Christchurch millionaire interested in developing the manganese deposits in the Cook Islands was paying the cost of the venture.
“He has no interest whatever in the manganese ore, which in any event is already the subject of an agreement signed between Sir Albert and a consortium led by another New Zealand businessman, Mr R. A. Owen.”
