Firemen overcome
Two firemen were overcome by fumes while fighting a fire in a boiler house and packing shed at 54 Bowenvale Avenue, Cashmere, about 5 a.m. yesterday.
The firemen, Messrs B. Cairns and W. N. Johnston, breathed the fumes of methyl bromide, a soil sterilant. They were admitted to The Princess Margaret Hospital where they were reported last evening to be in a fairly comfortable condition.
The owner of the shed, Mr A. R. Hawke, said that he noticed the fire after fuses blew in his house while he was watching the Rugby test on television.
The shed, which was badly damaged, was used for storing pipes, plastic sheeting, and wooden cases. Toxic fumes were still surrounding it late yesterday afternoon. The rear part of a house at 39 Donegal Street, Belfast. was badly damaged in a fire about 11.40 a.m. yesterday. Firemen from the Central and St Albans fire stations took about 15 minutes to control the blaze.
The house, a single-storey wooden building, is owned by the Railways Department. A kitchen and bathroom showed most damage.
