Shareholders of Knight Newspapers and Ridder Publications have approved a merger which will give the combined company the largest circulation of any American publisher. The two companies will dispose of their broadcasting interests and devote themselves exclusively to newspaper publishing. The new firm, KnightRidder Newspapers, will publish 35 daily newspapers in 16 states with a combined daily circulation of about 3.8 million, each retaining its autonomy in editorial and business matters.
