Young Quinn picked to win Matson Stakes

Minor compensation fo rtwo courageous thirds so far at the meeting should be achieved with a win by Young Quinn in the Matson Stakes at Addington Raceway tomorrow evening. He is the backmarker on 25m in this event, which will be run over 2600 m.

Young Quinn’s two plac-' Ings have been outstanding efforts, particularly his third behind Robaian and Hi Foyle in that record-shattering free-for-all last Friday. After being checked ati least twice in the running, he showed no signs of wil-j ting in the fastest-run 2000 m i in the world and came from: last starting the final 400 m! to finish within nine lengths! of the winner. Like Robaian• and Hi Foyle, he rated better than 2:0 for the distance.

Hi Foyle has had a fourth and a second so far at the meeting. He thrives on hard racing and looks ready to win at short, notice. Hi Foyle receives a start of 15m from Young Quinn and the backmarker will have to work hard to catch him.

Game Lad, a newcomer to this company at this meeting, will add interest from the limit. He was within a fraction of a New Zealand record when he returned 3:20.5 for 2600 m in the Smithson Handicap on Friday. These followed on wins in the Kaikoura Cup and on the first day of the meeting. Game Lad is obviously a better horse at Addington than he is at Auckland and he should share in this stake.

Speedy Guest, Why Bill and Lightsey are three other front-markers capable of racing prominently, while there will be support for the New Zealand Cup runner-up, Kotare Legend, which was spared a reserve-draining run in the free-for-all last Friday. Dark Forbes, Easton Light

and Philemon form a likely trio in the second leg, the Greyhound Handicap, a race in which Edis Nova, Bachelor Tom and Dupreez should also show to advantage.
