M. J. LAWSON SUSPENDED

M. J. Lawson was suspended from race-riding from the conclusion of the day’s racing up till and including November 23 by the judicial committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club at Riccarton on Saturday. Lawson’s suspension arose from an inquiry into the running of the Jockey Club Handicap, in which Lawson rode Pakistan Flight, last Wednesday. He was charged with careless riding in allowing his mount to shift ground outwards when ridden with the whip and causing interference to Alwick (W. D. Skelton) about 250 metres from the finish. The committee arrived at their decision after hearing all relevant evidence, viewing films of the incident and hearing a statement from Lawson. They also took into account that Lawson failed to take positive steps to keep his mount on a straight line when it was known to him that Pakistan Flight had shown tendencies in other races to shift ground.
