English sprinter to run here

The si'ver medallist in the Commonwealth Games 100 metres, Andrea Lynch (Eng* land), has accepted an invitation to return to Christchurch in January for the inaugural New Zealand Games.

However, other prominent Great Britain athletes who competed with success at the Commonwealth event

have declined. They include Brendan Foster (5000 metres), Tony Simmons (10,000 metres), David Black (10,000 metres), all from England, and the Scottish sprinter, David Jenkins. “In the cases of Jenkins, Foster, Simmons and Black, they are either deeply involved in our cross-country season or do not feel that they can attain the form at this early stage of the year necessary for top-level international competition,” the secretary of the British Amateur Athletic Board (Mr A. A. Gold) explained in a letter to the games organising committee. Alan Pascoe, the winner of the Commonwealth Games 400 metres hurdles final, is not yet in a position to commit himself one way or the other. Apart from Miss Lynch, only two other British athletes have confirmed their entries — the promising young 800 and 1500 metres runner, Steve Ovett, and the oustanding women’s 3000 metres runner, Joyce Smith.
