Thousands of Australians wooed to New Zealand by promises of jobs and lower living costs have been disappointed by accommodation shortages, according to a New Zealand consulate official in Sydney. Although New Zealand had plenty of job vacancies, the accommodation shortage was acute, he said.
The situation was serious in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, he said. These cities did not have as many high-rise flats and apartments as Australian cities. The official quoted figures showing that a record 56,000 people entered New Zealand in 1972-73—and more than a third were. Australians.
