Farm managers in Sahara

A Christchurch man, Mr D. G. Lester, is one of four New Zealand farm managers who have been selected to go this month to the Kufra oasis in the middle of the Sahara. The men will manage for the Libyan Government a major sheepfarming development on irrigated desert country.

Kufra is 1000 kilometres south of the coastal town of Benghazi. The four men met in Parlmerston North recently for a final briefing. The other three are Messrs W. J. Andrews (Wellington), P. R. Bennett (Pahiatua), and N. Thomson (Palmerston North). The project was identified by the New Zealand consulting group, Enex, and the managers were recruited by Dalgety New Zealand, Ltd. The four men, who will later be joined by their wives and families, are under a two-year contract to the Libyan Government. Their children will receive correspondence lessons from New Zealand.
