Outstanding performance by Canterbury sprinters

Canterbury’s leading sprinters indicated that they would be making strong claims for inclusion in the New Zealand Games team when they gave outstanding early season performances during the inter-club track and field meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

The Commonwealth Games representative, T. A. Cochrane (High School Old Boys), was particularly impressive in his first competitive run of the season over 400 m.

He won effortlessly in 48.5 sec — less than a second outside his provincial record. His club-mate, N. Daniel, was runner-up in 51.5 sec

Another Old Boys sprinter who wore the silver fern in the Commonwealth Games, G. S. Anderson, was in a class of his own in the shorter sprints. There were no signs of the Rugby injury j which upset his preparation as he raced to victory in the 100 m in 10.9 sec and the 200 m in 22.35ec. In both races, Anderson was running well within himself. The New Zealand decathlon champion, M. Mene (Technical), was second in the 100 m in 11.4 sec. In the 200 m the second place honours went to K. David-

son (University-Shirley) in 24.1 sec. HONOURS SHARED

The standard in the women’s sprints was no less impressive. Miss B. Peterson (Technical) looked very sharp in winning the senior 100 m in 12.9 sec from her club-mate, Miss J. Beckett, who was o.2sec slower. Third place went to the New Zealand pentathlon champion, Miss S. Bumside (Technical).

Miss Beckett won the 400 m in the excellent time of 55.75ec, only I.ssec outside the long-standing record of the former Olympic representative, Mrs M. A. Stephen. Miss Peterson’s time for second was 60.6 sec. RECORD JUMP

The “Farmers’ Athlete of the Week” award went to T. Lomax (High School Old Boys), who won the under--17 boys’ high jump with a new Canterbury . record height of 1.87 metres (6ft l|in). K. McKee (Toe H), who held the previous record, also cleared the same record height but lost the event on a countback. Both athletes showed remarkable consistency. When they first cleared the record height, the cross bar was found to be too short for record purposes. They were asked to attempt the height again with a new bar, and. remarkably, both succeeded.

P. Crampton (Cashmere), who has been named In the list of “certainties” for the New Zealand Games, was to have made his first appearance in the senior high jump. But changes were made in the order of competition to allow juniors and under-age jumpers to start first and Crampton, who had already warmed up, decided not to compete.

However, lie had the satisfaction of winning the junior 100 m hurdles in 15.9 sec. Mrs V. I. Young (Technical) was untroubled to win the womens shot with a throw of 12.58 m and Miss Burnside had an equally convincing win in the women’s long jump. Her best leap was 6.01 m. With the exception of the jumps, the field events were banished to the warm-up area outside the main stadium—a situation which athletes were rather unhappy about. The hammer throw was not even held and I the New Zealand Games representative, B. Harland (Technical), has yet to throw in inter-club competition this season. The arena in the centre of Queen Elizabeth Park was badly damaged by soccer matches and l athletes have to keep off it while 1 it recovers. It is expected to be at least a fortnight before the turf will have recovered sufficiently to allow field events to take place.
