Rescuers and rescued in trouble

<N.Z. Prext Association* DUNEDIN The annual Round-White-Islam surf race almost had a tragi: ending, after being held vester dav afternoon in the worst con ditions experienced in the sixyear history of the race. A Brighton (Dunedin) crew was swamped about half a mile from tile beach and was rescued by a boat from South Brighton (Christchurch). This boat in turn was overturned about a quarter of a mile from shore, and rescuers and rescued had to struggle ashore in the surf. The three members of the Brighton (Dunedin) crew were suffering from exposure, and had to be carried up the beach Out of a total of almost 20 entrants in the race, only four rounded the island. Because of the rough conditions, one canoe was cracked and several oars broken, and most craft went out and back full of water. The fastest time was recorded by B. Leask (St Clair) in 37 minutes, and he also won the | event on handicap. He was on a surf ski.
