The Supreme Court of the Soviet Union has rejected an appeal by a Russian-born Canadian citizen, David Geldiaschvilli, aged 58, who has been found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to death by firing squad, Agence France-Presse reports. A spokesman of the Ministry' of Extreme Affairs said yesterday that the Canadian Government had intervened. He w- but it is presumed that the Government had asked that the sentence be commuted. Geldiaschvilli from Montreal, was arrested in July of last year while on a visit to the Soviet Union, and was found guilty of taking part in the killings of 3000 Jews near Stavropol, in the south-west of the Soviet Union during the Second World War.
