Southern lake life
j Anau Anchorage. By Lawson Burrows. John Mclndoe. 149 pp. The anecdotes of Lawson Burrows about the building up of his tourist-launch business on Lake Te Anau and his occasional seafishing ventures show him to be a shrewd man capable of undertaking most enterprises. Life was comparatively austere when Mr Burrows went to Te Anau but home-made entertainment afforded mirth aplenty. The gentleman at a fancy dress dance who was tripped up
by his skirt and underwear swathed around his ankles, has earned undying fame, thanks to the author. Search and rescue operations. foiling the lawful inquiries of the area ranger, and an untimely stranding with a launch full of passengers are but a few instances of dramatic events which took place in and around the lake. Mr Burrows has the raconteur’s instinct for narrative which makes his book pleasing whether he is describing the glorious countryside or the pecularities of his fellows.
