N.Z. ads for Aust, workers

(N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. Wednesday’s statement by the Prime Minister (Mr Rowling) that a watch would be kept on out-of-work Australians moving to New Zealand was displayed prominently in Sydney newspapers on Thursday —- just a few pages in front of advertisements enticing Australians to work in New Zealand.

Australian papers in recent months have been carrying an increasing number of advertisements from New Zealand firms seeking workers. One paper, the “Australian,” which circulates nationally, has a special New Zealand vacancies column, which sometimes runs to more than half a page. Thursday’s issue of the “Australian” carries 10 separate advertisements from New Zealand companies offering jobs. Thursday is not regarded as a heavy day for situations vacant advertisements.

Most of the positions offered today were in the plural and included open-

ings for motor mechanics, sheetmetal workers, fitters, turners, welders, toolmakers, panelbeaters and knitwear mechanics. All but one of the advertisements offered jobs in Auckland, with the other offering positions with a New Plymouth engineering firm and the promise of “no industrial disputes.”
