Late buying push reversed trend
Australian markets closed on a firmer note in quiet trading conditions yesterday. A late infusion of buying orders reversed an earlier mixed trend, and helped share prices advance to higher levels.
B.H.P. rose 8c to 520 c while the B.N.S.W. rose 12c higher at 390 c, and C.U.8., T.N.T., Thiess, Bums Philp, and CSR recorded substantial rises. Property developers were stronger. Jennings picked up 2c at 82c.Among the miners, uranium stocks attracted keen buying support. Pancontinental rose 7c to 162 c while Peko-Wallsend firmed 8c at 248 c. Kathleen was 3c better at 88c. Western Mining gained 4c at 137 c and Hamersley 3c to 119 c, but M.1.M., A.M. and S., B.H. South and C.R.A. were lower. Bougainville was marked down slightly at 92c but Emperor held steady. Oils were generally steady but A.A.R; dropped 4c to 91c.
